Real Talk

I don’t get it….

Many people are arguing Obama’s recent support for gay marriage is just another campaign scheme to get votes. Personally I don’t really care. He’s the first president to openly support gay marriage, so whether or not he just did it for votes, its still a step in the right direction.

90 minutes after his announcement his campaign earned $1 million dollars. While that is true, as expected, there was backlash from the religious community. Hours after the announcement, he made a conference call to 8 black pastors who were against his statement. Some said although they disagreed, they will still continue to support the President in the upcoming election. Others were unswayed, saying they find it difficult to support the President after his new stand.

I don’t get it. I mean I do, it’s against their teachings, but is this really a breaking point for some people in deciding who is going to lead our country? Aren’t there more important issues to be worrying about in selecting a President?. The economy, unemployment, the still weak housing market, education, healthcare, foreign policy etc…

I know, you think gay marriage is icky, but no one is forcing you to marry two men or women in your church. You have a lovely constitutional amendment protecting that right. But when election time rolls around, make decisions about policies that directly affect you and family’s life and future, not worrying about whether or not the President is going approve equal rights for less 10% of the population. Weigh the pros and cons and make an overall educated vote on who you believe will be a good investment into our country’s future.
